  Solaris 10 Courses

NKT Training offer a number of courses specific to the Solaris 10 Operating System, Solaris System Administration Part 1 and Part 2 for delegates who have no UNIX Administration knowledge, and Solaris for Unix Administrators course for delegates with experience of administering other version of Unix or Linux.

The recent introduction of Solaris 10, Sun have yet again raised the bar by offering key technologies like zones/containers, dynamic tracing facility, ability for systems to offline failing hardware components, improved networking performance and new service management facility.

Solaris has not undergone such a major change between revisions since the transition between Solaris 1 and Solaris 2 in the early 90s. Therefore NKT Training have re-developed the Solaris System Administration Part 1 and Part 2 courses to include the new and powerful features of Solaris 10.

Two new Solaris courses have also been created;

Solaris 10 Update. A three day course available for current users of Solaris who are planning to migrate to Solaris 10 in the future.

Solaris 10 Dynamic Tracing. A two day course available to administrators and system tuners who have a requirement to monitor the performance of their systems and applications with easy-to-write D programs.

Course Overview

Solaris Dynamic Tracing, DTrace, is a new feature to Solaris 10. It is intended for use by System Administrators, System Tuning personnel, kernel developers and application programmers.

DTrace makes use of numerous built-in probes which are used to record arbitrary data from the system, trace processes on live systems, monitor kernel and application processes, all with minimal performance loss.

Who should attend

System Administrators, kernel developers system tuners and application programmers who require to monitor processes in detail on live systems.

Course Topics

  Introducing DTrace

Features, architecture, probes and D Scripts

  Using Dtrace

DTrace performance monitoring, aggregations, D variables, arrays, built-in macros

  Debugging applications

The pid provider, application variables, transient errors, file access.

  Debugging system problems

Accessing Kernel Symbols, Kernel variables and data structures, lock contention info, monitoring read calls, anonymous tracing, speculative tracing, DTrace privileges.

  Troubleshooting DTrace

Minimising performance impact, DTrace buffers, debugging DTrace scripts.

Course Overview

Solaris has not undergone such a major change since the introduction of Solaris 2 in the early 90's when Sun converted their operating system from BSD to System V Unix. The Solaris 10 Update course therefore is essential for existing Solaris administrators who need to update their skills to manage the new Solaris 10 Operating System. The course starts with an overview of the updated existing features and then concentrates on the details of the numerous new features.

Who should attend

The course contains essential knowledge for current Solaris administrators who will be required to manage the new Solaris 10 Operating System

Course Topics

  Solaris 10 existing features update.

Installation, file systems. authentication, IPQoS, FireEngine project, TCP multidata enhancement, NFS, security.

  Zones

Concepts, Configuration, installing, booting, halting, accessing, managing resources

  Fault & Service Management Facility

Architecture, naming schemes, commands, troubleshooting, SMF architecture, managing SMF Services, troubleshooting SMF

  DTrace overview

Features, architecture, probes and D Scripts
